53rd Annual 2009 Champion's Ride Rodeo Results

“We already agreed that last week’s rodeo was one of our most enjoyable. The cool weather, great horses, and some really good rides, all combined to make a perfect afternoon. Thanks for putting on such a great event year after year.”

“We were at the Ride last Sunday and it was awesome. I didn’t know about the event until a friend took me to last years. I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of rides and hope to make it an annual trip.”

“Always a good show. Over the years seen lots of good cowboys.”

These are just a few of the comments received about the 53rd Champions Ride Saddle Bronc Match – which rodeo committee members and Home On The Range staff have deemed a huge success.

It was a blustery day, but it didn’t stop the enthusiasm of the fans. Nearly 1800 people brought their blankets and chairs and sat on the hillside to watch the rodeo. For some, this was their first visit or first time they have ever seen this type of event. For a few, this was their 53rd rodeo, having attended every year since the first one.

The number of participating cowboys was up this year too. Instead of the typical 20-25 cowboys being invited, there were 34 cowboys – all ready for the challenge and hopefully to earn the name “Champion.”

The prize money given out was $25,000. Each saddle bronc rider got to ride one bronc. The top thirteen scores advanced to the Jim and Tom Tescher short-go round. The scores were combined and compiled, and James Irish of Lewistown, Montana was named “Champion” with a total of 169 points on two broncs.  James received a trophy bronc saddle made by Trent Taylor of Sidney, Montana, a trophy        .30 .30 rifle, and his name engraved on the Bud Pauley Trophy. Jake Hayworth was the cowboy with the high point ride of the day and of the short-go. Jake drew _____________ rode ______________ and received 87 points. He was given a set of hand-made spur straps, the Jim and Tom Tescher memorial jacket, and an engraved plaque.

Champions Ride Commemorative Print

"Little Britches, Big Dreams" is the title of the commemorative print that was painted by Towner artist, Andrew Knudson. The idea for the painting came to Knudson quickly after he was asked to do it. "The cowboys and kids theme seemed real obvious," he said. "That’s usually the first thing that comes to mind for a lot of people when you say Champions Ride. They think of Home On The Range, and, of course, the kids." The painting shows some children looking in awe through the fence as a saddle bronc rider rides across the arena. In the distant background is Cassedy Hill with the comforting view of the cross extending up into a beautiful blue North Dakota sky, reminding us of Father Cassedy, founder of Home On The Range and Father Fahnlander, his successor, who both gave so much of themselves to make the Ranch a true home to children in need. The talented artist truly captured the tie between Home On The Range and Champions Ride when he painted "Little Britches, Big Dreams" to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Champions Ride. It is a series of 480 signed and numbered prints priced at $25.

Knudson works out of his Plains Perspective Studio/Gallery in Towner, ND. His creative flair is evident throughout, from his handmade furniture to his art using feathers, antlers, and nearly everything in between. He does his own framing and matting, often building his own frames out of interesting old wood. As he modestly shows his artwork, you can tell that he has a keen artist’s eye and that art has always been a big part of his life. The authenticity and detail in his work is amazing. Like many artists, Knudson is never totally happy with his own work. "I sometimes have to just walk away or send it out the door to the client or I will keep changing things. I never feel really done," Knudson explained. "I keep seeing things that I can improve on."

Knudson is a graduate of North Dakota State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Art. Growing up, he always knew that art would be his field. "I drew all through school," he stated, and then added with a smile, "but it was usually when I wasn’t supposed to be!" Art was the only thing that interested him in school and he pursued every medium possible. His godmother was an art teacher and purchased his first art supplies for him. She also helped him with his first painting. Knudson is a former rodeo contestant and an avid outdoorsman and his work reflects his life experiences. He is well known for his attention to detail and his love for the northern plains is evident in his paintings.

Knudson has been making quite a name for himself with his unique art painted directly on feathers. He does several limited edition series for Ducks Unlimited each year. Each feather is hand painted, numbered and a true original. He does a different series for three states. He is also very involved in the Catch a Painted Pony charity for Easter Seals. The life size horses are painted by various artists, displayed at businesses, and then auctioned to the highest bidder. This fundraiser has been a huge success for Easter Seals, largely due to the generosity of artists like Knudson.

Home On The Range feels fortunate to have had Knudson commemorate fifty years of Champions Ride with his original artwork. He is on hand to autograph your print today. Be sure to meet the artist who created "Little Britches, Big Dreams." To learn more about Knudson’s work, please visit his website at www.plainsperspective.com.

The print sells for $25 and is available in several locations and at HOTR. Postage for mailing is $10. They are signed and numbered. We did a series of 475 prints

It’s wild! It’s wooly! It’s western! Home On The Range has been sponsoring this unique fundraiser for over 45 years and it is going strong! The invitational Saddle Bronc Match is a premiere event that features twenty of the top professional cowboys mounted on some of pro rodeo’s toughest stock from contractors in the United States and Canada. It is truly entertainment at its finest, and many have ranked it right up there with a performance of the saddle bronc riding at the National Finals Rodeo! In fact, every world champion saddle bronc rider except one has ridden at Champions Ride.

Annually, on the first Sunday in August, spectators gather in the natural amphitheater to watch “champions ride” to benefit the children who call the ranch home. The rustic arena is nestled on the grounds of HOTR in the serene beauty of western North Dakota. Fans are truly “up close and personal” with many of the rodeo personalities they follow on TV. Champion's Ride gives them a great opportunity to get autographs and meet many of their cowboy heroes.

The Ranch and the Rodeo have grown up together and it would be nearly impossible to separate the two and the strong western heritage they share. In 2000, Champion's Ride was honored with the prestigious Special Achievement Award from the ND Cowboy Hall of Fame and was inducted into its ranks – only the third such event to have been honored in this way.

The rodeo itself is truly a class act, but more importantly, it brings people to Home On The Range, to see the working ranch dedicated to helping homeless, troubled and neglected children. The children themselves are on-hand to give tours and share the colorful history of the facility.

Champion's Ride is an affordable quality entertainment event for all ages. There is even a special priced family ticket! All proceeds from the event go to support the children that call Home On The Range home.

Rodeo Dates for the 50th Annual 2006 Champion's Ride is August 6 at 1:00 PM (Mountain Time).
Pre-Rodeo entertainment may begin at 11:30 AM.
